Big Horse selections for Friday and Saturday, May 23-24
Friday, May 23, 2014 - by Tim Second

The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday. The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering.

This weekend we will focus our plays at both the Meadowlands and Yonkers Raceway. The Meadowlands features New Jersey Sire Stakes action this weekend and Yonkers features eliminations for the Lismore and the Art Rooney on Saturday.

Many of the fields are short at Yonkers in the eliminations and short fields usually produce short payoffs so we will be looking for value with other races that have full fields this Saturday.

Last weekend we cashed for $14 from our $98 in mythical wagers. Heading into weekend #82 we have wagered $8,019 and have cashed for $6,465.

Good luck everyone!

Big Horse Selections for Friday and Saturday, May 23-24

Friday, May 23

Meadowlands Race #5 ** $40,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes 3-year-old filly trot**
(8) Heaven’s Door (3-1) is making just her second start in this barn. She raced well last time out despite a costly break early, leaving her far back, and she closed in a :26.2 last quarter. She has been getting plenty of support in all of her lifetime starts and if she behaves could be very tough in here tonight.

The Play: $1 trifecta 8/345/34567910 Cost: $18

Yonkers Race #1
(2) Dutch Richman (3-1) beat a tougher group last time out after a long outside first over trip. He scored in 1:54.1 last time and that is faster than any of these in their recent starts. He draws even further inside here and should be very tough for the Garcia-Herrera connections.

The Play: $1 trifecta 2/16/all Cost: $12

Yonkers Race #3
(4) Harnessnitencanada (4-1) closed strong last time out to be second after a costly break two starts back. He seems to do his best racing in the last half-mile and will again get the services of Dan Dube. His post should put him in striking range to unleash his custom late kick.

The Play: $1 trifecta 4/123/123567 Cost: $15

Saturday, May 24

Yonkers Raceway Race #3
(3) Panohgahela (4-1) made up more than 14 lengths last time out at Yonkers when starting from post seven. He tried to leave two starts back from post seven but was parked the mile. With his inside post he should be able to race much closer early and he has a big shot against this field.

The Play: $10 to win and place #3 Cost: $20

Meadowlands Race #6
(3) Warrawee Needy (3-1) raced big last time, he was parked early and put up a 1:19.4 three-quarters and just missed at the finish. He was a seven-time, $286,000 winner last year and draws post three. He retains Tetrick and looks to have a big shot here. The entry of 1, 1A, and 1B is a very powerful entry, but two of the three horses have outside posts that could make them vulnerable here.

The Play: $15 exacta 3-1 Cost: $15

Meadowlands Race #9
(4) Lyonssomewhere (4-1) raced well in his prep, closing more than 10 lengths and just missing in a :26 last quarter. He was a perfect two-for-two last year and looks primed for a big effort here.

The Play: $10 exacta 4/67 Cost: $20
