Big Horse selections for Friday and Saturday, May 9-10
Friday, May 9, 2014 - by Tim Second

The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday. The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering.

We have plenty of Stakes action ahead this weekend and we will be focusing all of our plays exclusively at the Meadowlands on both Friday and Saturday night.  Friday’s Stake action includes the John Simpson Memorial and the Reynolds; Saturday’s features include the Arthur Cutler Memorial Eliminations and the TVG Free For All Championship.

Saturday’s TVG Free For All sets up to be a great race!  The field has combined earnings of over $16 Million Dollars including the $6 Million Foiled Again who will look to add to his bankroll.  Golden Receiver, Sweet Lou, Word Power, Bolt The Duer, Warrawee Needy are other stars in the field, it will be a very fast and contentious as the best pacers in the world compete in what should be a very exciting finish.

Last weekend we cashed two of our five plays, cashing $115 from our $100 bankroll.  Heading into weekend #80 we have wagered $7,821 and have cashed for $6,415.

Good Luck Everyone.

Big Horse Selections for Friday and Saturday, May 9-10

Friday, May 9

The Meadowlands Race #3  ** $51,543 John Simpson Memorial 3-year-old colt and geldings **
#4 Lukas Hall (6-1) raced well last time out making up ground trotting to a :27.2 last quarter.  That was his first race since September of last year, so he should benefit from that tightener and may try a more aggressive approach here.  #10 Trixton (5-2) was finishing strong last time out but ran out of track as he exploded with a :26.4 last quarter.  He is the one to beat; he is a 4 time winner from 9 lifetime starts.  He will likely be the favorite but will have to navigate from this tough 10 post here.

The Play:  $1 Trifecta  4,10/4,10/123569   Cost:  $12

The Meadowlands Race #6  ** $48.415 Reynolds 3-year old-Fillies **
#1 A La Notte Hanover (10-1) was an easy winner while facing softer last time out at Pocono Downs as a heavy 1-5 favorite.  She has won twice in her 10 race career so far and has finished well when facing tougher stakes competition.  She is one of the higher money earners in this field and should merit attention with her hot trainer and driver connections.

The Play:  $8 Exacta 1/256  Cost:  $24

The Meadowlands Race #11  ** $30,000 Filly and Mares A-2/A-1/FFA Handicap **
#2 Feeling You (8-1) made up more than 9 lengths last time out at Yonkers in the Blue Chip Final finishing well in 1:53.  She draws inside and when right has beaten the top pacers before.  She has a mark of 1:48.4 at the Meadowlands and won over $407,000 last year. This race appears to have plenty of speed and it could set up for a closer.

The Play:  $10 to win #2  Cost:  $10

Saturday, May 10

The Meadowlands Race #2
#2 Mister B’s Way (7-2) has had two big preps with his trainer driving and finishing with very fast last quarters.  He draws inside in his pari-mutuel debut and will pick up Ron Pierce.  #7 Lady With Credit (10-1) is a sleeper to watch after also prepping twice and finishing well for Trainer/Driver Trond Smedshammer.  #9 Scream and Shout (8-5) will be one of the favorites and has been in the money in 9 of 12 races facing the likes of Shake it Cerry and Lifetime Pursuit, she is an obvious choice.

The Play:  $1 Trifecta 2/79/all   and a $4 Exacta  2/79  Cost:  $24

The Meadowlands Race #6 ** $40,000 Arthur Cutler Memorial Elimination **
#6 Modern Family (8-5) has been impressive in all 9 of his starts this year winning 5 and earning over $87,000.  He trotted just one fifth off of his lifetime best and has strung together four straight victories.  He is the one to beat.  #3 Dw’s Ny Yank (6-1) has also been very sharp this year having been in the money in all 10 of his starts this year with 7 wins to his credit.

The Play:  $10 Exacta 6-3 Cost:  $10

The Meadowlands Race #7 ** $50,000 TVG-FFA Championship **
#5 Bolt The Duer (6-1) has had three preps in his tune up for this race.  He competed in last year’s edition from post 10 and was a closing 3rd to Foiled Again.  He looked very impressive in his tune up last time pacing to a 1:51:2 mile with a :27.2 last quarter.  We will take a shot with him by playing a small win ticket.

The Play:  $10 to win #5  Cost:  $10

The Meadowlands Race #11 ** $40,000 Arthur Cutler Memorial Elimination **
#1 Sevruga (5-2) was battled very hard early last time out and paid the price late in the stretch as he gave way to a second place finish.  He battled through a :26.2 opening quarter then pressed to the half in :54.4.  He finished his mile in 1:52.1 finishing second to Uncle Peter and missing by just a half-length at the finish.  He draws inside and has very fast front speed.  #2 Market Share (6-5) comes off a big qualifier and made over $1 Million last year, he is the one to beat.

The Play:  $10 Exacta 1-2  Cost:  $10
