The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday. The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering.
Its Kentucky Derby weekend, which means big crowds will come out on Saturday to all local racetracks and simulcast centers to catch the most exciting two minutes in sports, the Kentucky Derby. Make sure to plan accordingly as you head out to the track this weekend to play the harness races from your favorite racetracks, as parking lots will be jammed, teller lines will be long, so allow extra time so you don’t get shut out on any of the races you choose to play this weekend.
We will focus our weekend plays at the Meadowlands on Friday night, and then it will be off to Yonkers Raceway with two plays on Saturday.
Last weekend went well for the Big Horse and his followers. We had three winners of our five selections and cashed for $231 from our original $100 mythical bankroll.
Heading into weekend #79 we have wagered $7,721 and have cashed for $6,300.
Enjoy all the great harness racing this weekend and good luck to those playing the Kentucky Derby, I think I will be taking a shot with a longshot in this year’s Derby, #13 Chitu (20-1).
Big Horse Selections for Friday and Saturday, May 2 and 3
Friday, May 2
Meadowlands Race #6
#3 Art Ideal (5-1) will finally draw back inside after two tough outside post draws in the Artistic Vision series. She finished a strong second two starts back when blasting out from post 8, and has been in the money in 6 of her 9 starts so far this year. She has the Burke/Gingras connections in her corner and draws a great spot in here. #5 Marty Party (8-1) has been racing very gamely in each of her last several starts and has just been missing while facing similar competition.
The Play: $1 Trifecta 3/5/all and $1 Trifecta 3/all/5 and $6 to win #3 Cost: $20
Meadowlands Race #9
#10 Handover Belle (7-2) drops down in a wide open race and has been showing the best late speed of any of these lately. She has been trotting in the 1:54 range, and despite her post draw she could be a major force here. She was a 5-time $156,000 winner last year. Tim Tetrick is back in the bike.
The Play: $10 to win and place #10 Cost: $20
Meadowlands Race #12
#10 Tsmlil Orphan Andy(5-2) could be the logical choice after racing parked-out against tougher last time out and still finishing well. In prior races against this class of competition he put together two second place finishes and again should be closing through the stretch. #3 Riverfest (3-1) and #4 Four Starz Speed (9-2) drew inside of their main competition and look to fit well in this class.
The Play: $5 Exacta Box 3-10 and a $5 Exacta Box 4-10 Cost: $20
Saturday, May 3
Yonkers Race #4
#3 Bubbie Boy (4-1) is dropping down to the level he faced three starts back when he finished a closing second. He draws inside once again, he finds a field that he should be very competitive with and has a big chance to pick up the victory in this spot. #1 Sir Ziggy’s Z Tam (5-1) draws inside, and he will be firing early looking for position. He has had two inside draws and two outside draws in his last four starts and both times he drew inside he was very game in the stretch.
The Play: $2 Trifecta 3/1/24567 and a $2 Trifecta 3/24567/1 Cost: $20
Yonkers Race #8
#1 Valentino (5-1) has earned just shy of $750,000 in his racing career and continues to be very fast having already taken a 1:50.2 mark at the Meadowlands two starts back. He draws inside and may try to see how far his speed will carry him. He has raced well despite parked-out trips the last two races and now draws the key rail position here.
The Play: $8 Exacta 1/23 and a $4 Exacta 1-8 Cost: $20
