Big Horse Selections for Friday, March 21 and Saturday, March 22
Friday, March 21, 2014 - by Tim Second

The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday. The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering.

This weekend’s plays will be focused on the Meadowlands as we stick with the stakes races. The Horse and Groom series begins the action on Friday night, then the Clyde Hirt series on Saturday night along with the final of the Winter Survivor Series.

Last weekend we cashed a couple tickets leaving us $2 over our $100 mythical bankroll for the weekend. It could have been better, but again it certainly could have been worse.

Heading into weekend #73 we have wagered a total of $7,121 and have cashed for $5,585.

Have fun and good luck everyone.

Friday, March 21

Meadowlands Race #1 -- Horse and Groom -- 2nd Leg
#4 Bambino Glide (7-5) was a game winner in round one of the Horse and Groom series and has been showing very fast speed all year so far. He is the one to beat. Underneath, in the exotics we will try a pair of longshots, #2 Dreams Of Thunder (20-1) wasn’t bad last time out, trotting home in :27.2 off a qualifier. #5 Crosby’s Clam Bake (4-1) is a first time lasix user that shows fast speed in Canada and he is a seven-time winner in 17 starts last year.

The Play: $10 Exacta 4-2 and $10 Exacta 4-5 Cost: $20

Meadowlands Race #3 -- Horse and Groom -- 2nd Leg
#2 Banker Volo (7-2) is the fastest trotter in the field, having a 1:52.3 mark at Pocoano as a 2-year-old and a 1:53.1 mark three starts back at the Meadowlands. Last time out he made a costly break in the first turn and still managed to make up more than seven lengths with a :27 last quarter. If he behaves, he has a big shot here.

The Play: $10 Exacta 2-4 and $10 Exacta 2-6 Cost: $20

Saturday, March 22

Meadowlands Race #6 -- Clyde Hirt Stake -- 2nd Leg
#8 Avatartist (5-2) was ready to roll, debuting for the O'Sullivan barn last time and pacing to a 1:50 lifetime mark. He again draws outside but will likely use his fast early speed again to his advantage looking for position early. #1 Alexa’s Jackpot (3-1) Just missed after a long uncovered bid last time out in a photo finish. He again draws inside and is the main threat.

The Play: $10 Exacta 8-1 and a $1 Trifecta 8/1/all and $1 Trifecta 8/all/1 Cost: $22

Meadowlands Race #7 -- Clyde Hirt Stake -- 2nd Leg
#1 Wake Up Peter (2-1) is a perfect four for four this year and continues to steamroll past his competition. He will be a short price, but again will be very tough to beat. #7 Stars Above (8-1) raced big from the inside last time out, closing in a :27.1 last quarter. He has been lightly raced and has speed to overcome his outside post.

The Play: $1 Trifecta 1/7/all and $1 Trifecta 1/all/7 Cost: $18

Meadowlands Race #10 -- Winter Survivor Series -- Final
#2 McRusty (5-1) is making his fourth start since joining the Virgil Morgan, Jr. barn and has been improving each time showing :27 last quarters. He blasted out from post nine two starts back and just missed in a photo. He is inside now and looks to have a big chance to win this final.

The Play: $10 to win and place #2 Cost: $20
