Big Horse Selections for Friday, March 14 and Saturday, March 15
Friday, March 14, 2014 - by Tim Second

The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday. The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering.

Another great weekend of racing is upon us as we look forward to the opening rounds of the Clyde Hirt Stakes.  The first leg will be contested on Saturday Night at the Meadowlands and we have three divisions each going for a $20,000 purse.  The second leg will be contested next Saturday night and the final will take place on Saturday, March 29.

This weekend we will focus our plays at Yonkers on Friday, and the Meadowlands both Friday and Saturday night.

Last weekend we managed to cash two of our five plays leaving us a small profit of $7 as we cashed for $107 from our $100 mythical bankroll.

Heading into weekend #72 we have wagered $7,021 and have cashed for $5,483.

Good Luck Everyone.

Big Horse Selections for Friday, March 14 and Saturday, March 15

Friday, March 14

Yonkers Race #7
#3 Drive All Night (6-1) raced big last time out beating a softer group off a perfect pocket-trip when making his second start for the Allard barn.  He draws inside and will again be firing right from the start.  #2 Trip Hanover (8-5) is the one to beat after a strong victory in 1:54.4 at Yonkers last time out.  He again draws inside and will likely be the favorite.

The Play:  $10 Exacta Box 2-3  Cost:  $20

Meadowlands Race #1
#2 All The Buzz (5-2) raced great last time out just missing when making her debut and closing from well back.  She should be even better with that start under her belt and is the one to beat.

The Play:  $1 Trifecta Key 2/145910  Cost:  $20

Meadowlands Race #3
#3 BL Class Act (4-1) is certainly no cinch, but he has raced well in each of his last two races and has improved times in both races.  He again draws inside and has the speed to be a major factor.  He took his mark of 1:53.4 last year here at the Meadowlands.

The Play:  $10 to win #3   Cost:  $10

Meadowlands Race #7
#9 Oil Magnet (4-1) has had plenty of success in this barn in 2013 and rejoins this stable as he makes his second start back off a qualifier.  Last time out he closed in :27 seconds and was gaining ground at the finish.  He should be even better in here.  #5 Mattador D (5-2) raced big last time out winning round one in 1:51 with a :27 last quarter.  He was a 10-time winner last year and must be respected.

The Play:  $1 Trifecta 9/5/3467810  and $1 Trifecta 9/3467810/5  Cost:  $12

Saturday, March 15

Meadowlands Race #1   **Clyde Hirt Stake 1st Leg, 1st Division**
#8 Bukentine Hanover (5-2) Was very sharp last time out scoring first-over with a last quarter of :26.3 giving this gelding his 9th lifetime win.  He gets Tetrick once again and should be a major contender.  #3 See And Ski (2-1) came back ready last time out when making his 4 year-old debut.  He scored from post 8 after battling much of the way leading.

The Play:  $10 Exacta 8-3  Cost:  $10

Meadowlands Race #3  **Clyde Hirt Stake 1st Leg, 2nd Division**
#8 Avatartist (9-2) will debut for the Sullivan barn after very game tries at Woodbine.  He had won 7 times in 2013 and banked just under $80,000 last year.  This gelding has early speed and should be a major player here.  Dave Miller has the assignment.

The Play:  $10 to win and place #8  Cost:  $20

Meadowlands Race #11  **Clyde Hirt Stake 1st Leg, 3rd Division**
#9 Wake Up Peter (7-5) was winless in 19 starts last year chasing the top 3-year-olds and earning over $307,000.  This year he has been sensational, winning all three of his races and taking a 1:50 mark two starts back.  He will be short priced, but long on talent and the one to beat.

The Play:  $4 Exacta 9/67  Cost:  $8
