The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday. The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering.
This weekend we will focus our handicapping on the east coast as we will be using the Meadowlands and Yonkers Raceway to try and build our bankroll hoping the horses will be kind to us on this Valentine weekend.
The races appear to be very competitive this weekend and I believe we will be seeing some longshot come through. Four of our weekend plays have morning line odds of 10-1, with a little racing luck I think we will have a great opportunity to win some cash.
Always remember to take advantage of the Strategic Wagering Program’s Guaranteed Pools, the pool guarantee includes the Meadowlands Pick-4’s of $50,000, both Friday and Saturday night. Complete pool guarantees can be found on the handicapping tab of this website.
Last weekend we lost a majority of our bankroll on a horse named So Nice that had a troubled trip. She was interfered with while making her move, so she will be one we will keep an eye on in the upcoming weeks. We managed to only cash for $30 last weekend from our $100 mythical bankroll. Heading into weekend #68 we have wagered $6,651 and have cashed for $5,183.
Best of luck, and what better way to spend Valentine’s weekend than at your favorite local racetrack in the Clubhouse with the one you love.
Big Horse Selections for Friday, February 14 and Saturday, February 15
Friday, February 14
Meadowlands Race #2
#3 World Cup (10-1) missed second in a blanket finish last time out to the likely favorite #6 Daylon Magician. World Cup had won two straight and had beaten Daylon Magician in his prior start and is certainly a major player once again.
The Play: $10 to win #3 Cost: $10
Meadowlands Race #4
#9 Whata Donato (5-2) is making her first pari-mutuel start for Ron Burke after a big qualifier. She shows early speed and placed in the money 14 of her 19 starts as a three year old. We will be using several underneath hoping to score a price in a very competitive trotting event.
The Play: $1 Trifecta 9/2378/123457810 Cost: $26
Yonkers Raceway Race #5
#8 I’m Fabulous (10-1) is one that will need luck from her outside post, but was a 6-time $135,000 winner last year. She has finished second and third in this class two of the last three races and will get Brennan for this race. She will be a price, but has the class to be worth a few bucks if she gets some luck in here.
The Play: $5 to win and place #8 Cost: $10
Yonkers Raceway Race #7
#2 Cheyenne Miriam (10-1) missed three weeks prior to her last race when the racing gods were against her as she showed parked the entire mile two and three wide, interference at the three-quarter point of class and still closed strong in :27.3 at the Meadowlands. She has shown speed before and finally draws inside. She is Ron Pierce’s choice over #1 and #7 in this race. I think there is a lot to like about her chances and note she was in the money in 23 of 28 starts last year!
The Play: $10 to win and place #2 Cost: $20
Saturday, February 15th
The Meadowlands Race #1
#6 Late Night Joke (10-1) has raced against much better than these in a $50,000 claimer back in early January, but he has yet to hit the board in five starts so far this year. He shows 1:51 and 1:52 miles in his recent past performances and had made $52,000 in just 18 starts last year. Maybe we will see a wakeup call in this softer spot here. Tetrick has the call.
The Play: $7 to win and place #6 Cost: $14
The Meadowlands Race #9
#3 Berkshire Bear (7-2) battled hard last time out parked outside and just missed by three-quarters of a length in a photo finish. He has been on the board in three of four starts this year and draws inside. His last quarter speed has been outstanding and he just needs to be put into position late to be a major force in here.
The play: $10 to win and place #3 Cost: $20
