Big Horse Handicapper's selections for Jan. 31 & Feb 1
Friday, January 31, 2014 - by Tim Second

The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday. The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering.

This weekend we will stick to the half mile racetracks, it will be Yonkers Raceway on Friday night, then it will be off to Northfield Park and their flying turns on Saturday.

Last weekend was kind to the Big Horse and his followers.  We wagered a total of $99 and cashed for $303.  Our score came at Yonkers Raceway as we had Arden’s Storm N ($18.20) in the third race last weekend to win and place, and we also caught the Trifecta with paid $169 for a $1 ticket.

We will try to keep our good luck alive once again this weekend as we will focus our plays on several horses 6-1 or higher that may be coming into form.

Heading into weekend #66 we have wagered $6,451 and have cashed for $5,153.

Good Luck Everyone.

Big Horse Selections for Friday, January 31 and Saturday, February 1

Friday, January 31

Yonkers Raceway Race #6
#4 Little Santamonica (10-1) raced well last time out despite having drawn the dreaded eight post at Yonkers facing similar.  She showed good late closing kick and should be able to stay much closer with her improved draw.  She has beaten top level competition before and I believe she is rounding back into top form.

The Play:  $15 to win and place #4  Cost:  $30

Yonkers Raceway Race #10
#2 Touch and Go (6-1) draws inside in his return to Yonkers after a big mile last time out at Freehold with a game score while being parked-out most of his mile.  He meets up with a field that is short of any standout rivals and gets Brennan in the bike here.  He is worth a long look in this race.

The Play:  $10 to win and place #2  Cost:  $20

Saturday, February 1

Northfield Park Race #5
#3 Mount Joy (7-2) just missed last time out after a long first-over try when she finished third facing similar competition.  She again draws inside and retains Ryan Stahl.  With the right trip, she has a big shot in this race.  We will play her on top in a small Trifecta wager.

The Play:  $1 Trifecta 3/245/24578  Cost: $12

Northfield Park Race #6
#3 Pounne De Luxe (5-2) is the focus of our handicapping in this race.  She has already won two of her four races this year and has won the last two times she has been in this class.  She draws the perfect post to showcase her early speed and should get good position throughout.  She is the one to beat.

The Play:  $1 Trifecta 3/124/124678  Cost:  $15

Northfield Park Race #8
Let’s try a small wager on #8 Save My Dragon (6-1).  Sharpness isn’t the question; she’s been in the money in all seven of her last starts.  The concern is the post position, but she did fire out last time, and just missed at the finish in a very game try.  She has won her share as a 3-year-old winning 7 times, and she made over $62,000 last year.  She is worth a shot in here.

The Play:  $10 to win #8   Cost:  $10

Northfield Park Race #10
#2 Blind Spot Hanover (7-2) raced big, very big last time out in her second start for the Roy Murphy barn as she drew clear to win going away in 1:57.2 facing softer.  She is up in class here, but speed wise fits well and draws inside which will help her chances for a repeat victory.  #1 Survivalizm (9-2) should be in for a sweet trip with her inside post draw and finished second as a longshot against slightly softer, she again could make the ticket.  #6 Y Mach Me (4-1) is another who raced well as a longshot last time out and a similar effort could put her on the ticket as well.

The Play:  $8 Exacta 2-1  and a $5 Exacta 2-6  Cost:  $13
