Big Horse Handicapper's selections for Jan. 24 & 25
Friday, January 24, 2014 - by Tim Second

The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday. The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering.

With the Meadowlands not offering live racing over the next couple weekends, we will be focusing this weekend’s plays at Yonkers on Friday, then it is off to sunny Florida for Pompano Park on Saturday.

Last weekend at The Meadowlands in the 12th race on Saturday, we threw out one horse on our exotic Trifecta play to stay within the $100 mythical bankroll, so I selected to toss a horse that had been off form the longshot Mindset.  And wouldn’t you know, of course that horse snuck in for second beating us out of our Trifecta which paid $250.  But that’s racing; sometimes things are crystal clear and everything goes great.  Other times, hindsight is always 20/20, the could of’s should of’s get the best of us, but as I say keep you head up, stay strong and look forward to another weekend of action!

Heading into weekend #65 we have wagered $6,352 and have cashed for $4,850.

Good luck everyone.

Big Horse Selections for Friday, Jan 24 and Saturday, Jan 25

Friday, January 24

Yonkers Raceway Race #3

#7 Arden’s Storm N (5-1) appears to have hooked up with a soft division of this $12,500 claiming allowance field.  He was a 5-time, $46,000 winner in 2013 and shows a win against similar 5 starts back at Yonkers.  He picks up Brennan here and just needs a good trip to be a major factor in this spot.

The Play:  $10 to win and place #7  and a $1 Trifecta Key 7/1568  Cost:  $32

Yonkers Raceway Race #6

#1 Keepers Destiny (6-1) was closing ground in the stretch at the Meadowlands two starts back against the morning line favorite in here #4 Lorrie Please(8-5).  Keepers Destiny will be firing out from the inside and is likely to get a good trip throughout.  She made $110,000 last year with just two victories and is always a factor when able to stay close to the pace.

The Play:  $4 Exacta Box 1-3  and  1-4  Cost:  $16

Yonkers Raceway Race #8

#7 Cowgirl Hall (4-1) was outstanding last time out at Yonkers drawing away through the stretch to win by 6-1/2 lengths at the finish.  She moves up to the Open ranks here and so far is a perfect 2 for 2 this year.  With her gate speed we will key her on top with several others for the exotics.

The Play:  $1 Trifecta Key 7/1256  Cost:  $12

Saturday, January 25

Pompano Park Race #3
#5 Electric Lad (8-1) has not missed the board in his last seven starts and has been very close to victory in his last few.  He seems to be best near the front and could be firing out with lack of inside speed here.  Electric Lad made nearly $60,000 with just three victories last year so he definitely has the class to be dangerous.

The Play:  $7 to win and place #5  Cost:  $14

Pompano Park Race #4
#6 Ahead of the Curve (8-1) made his first start in Florida last time out when debuting for trainer Pellegrino and drawing post 9.  Ahead of the Curve closed for a fifth place finish against similar last time and could further improve in his second start off the layoff.  He meets a field with no standouts and should be worth a small wager here.

The Play:  $5 to win and place #6  Cost:  $10

Pompano Park Race #5

In a very competitive field of this $7,500 condition claimer, I will give the edge to #1 Future Cast (7-2).  Future Cast had post 8 last time out and was closing ground on the leaders after showing early speed.  She defeated similar two starts back, she retains Ed Hensley and should be able to stay close up with the major speed (#7 & #8) drawing very tough posts in this race.

The Play:  $1 Trifecta 1/478/234678  Cost:  $15
