Big Horse Handicapper's selections for Jan. 17 & 18
Friday, January 17, 2014 - by Tim Second

The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday. The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering.

This weekend we will focus our plays on Yonkers Raceway’s half-mile track on Friday night, then we will head to the big track, The Meadowland’s one mile oval on Saturday night.

Last weekend we tried a couple favorites and a few longshots, but our longshot failed to bring us any luck and we only managed to cash for $45 from our $100 mythical bankroll.  I was most disappointed in Deadliest Catch last Friday night, as he appeared to be in a field he should have been able to handle; unfortunately he made breaks throughout the race eliminating his chances.  He will be one we will keep an eye on because when right, he has tons of talent and is certainly one we will be hearing from.

Heading into weekend #64 we have wagered $6,252 and have cashed for $4,848

Good Luck Everyone!

Big Horse Selections for Friday, January 17 and Saturday, January 18

Friday, January 17

Yonkers Raceway Race #3
#4 Victory Tax (4-1) took his lead to the stretch last time out before giving way late to finish second when going a mile and a sixteenth last time out.  He switches back to the mile distance here and could be even better getting Bartlett back in the bike and now having his second start back since his month break prior to his latest.  We are going to key him first and second in our exotics.

The Play:  $1 Trifecta Key 4/1236  and a $1 Trifecta Part Wheel 1236/4/1236  Cost:  $24

Yonkers Raceway Race #4
#4 No Real Surprise (7-5) is the one to beat after three straight wins and a second place finish last time out, but we will try a couple of price horses on the inside.  #1 Terrys Star Dragon (8-1) finally draws inside and shows speed and will get Brennan and #2 Dutch Richman (10-1) also looks intriguing here after a big win in 1:52.2 in his stable debut three starts back, then suffering back to back horrid trips in his last two.  He could be primed for a big effort if the racing gods spare him a little luck in here.

The Play:  $1 Trifecta 12/4/all   and a $4 Exacta Box 1-4  and  2-4   Cost:  $28

Yonkers Raceway Race #7
#3 Perfect Picture (3-1) was Brian Sears’s choice over morning line favorite #4 Turtle Express (8-5).  Perfect Picture was a handy winner last time out against similar competition and again draws inside. She should once again be very tough in this group.  Turtle Express (8-5) has shown breaking problems in the past and could be a risky morning line favorite, so we will be keying our Trifecta using #3 Perfect Picture on top with several underneath.

The Play:  $1 Trifecta Key  3/12467  Cost:  $20

Saturday, January 18

The Meadowlands Race #6
#5 Cobalt Man (5-1) has never been better as he paced to a lifetime best (1:49:4) last time out.   He will move up in class for this race, but he has been pacing very consistent last quarters in :27 and deserves a long look despite his class hike.  He draws the perfect post to be put into play and could again be a decent price at the windows.

The Play:  $7 to win and place #5  Cost:  $14

The Meadowlands Race #12
#2 Burkentine Hanover (7-2) finished with pace last time out after being parked every step of the way against similar competition.  He was a 7-time winner in 16 starts last year and draws inside after showing consistent :26 last quarters.  #3 Muscle Beach Boy (2-1) beat a similar group last time out in wire to wire fashion and has been no worse than second in any of his last 5 past performance lines.

The Play:  $1 Trifecta 2/3/14678910  and  $1 Trifecta  2/14678910/3  Cost:  $14
