Big Horse Handicapper's selections for Jan. 10 & 11
Friday, January 10, 2014 - by Tim Second

The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday. The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering.

Last weekend we had a couple of chances at a nice score, but we were a head shy as Bettor’s Edge held off our choice Dynamic Youth in a great stretch drive.  We also selected Ima Giggity Fool making his first start off a layoff and we got the price we wanted (10-1), but he ended up being second best but we did get a nice $7.40 place price.  Despite our close calls we managed to cash for $82 last weekend from our $100 mythical bankroll.

This weekend we will focus our plays at The Meadowlands on both Friday and Saturday night.

Heading into weekend #63 we have wagered $6,152 and have cashed for $4,803.

Good Luck Everyone!

Big Horse Selections for Friday, January 10 and Saturday, January 11

Friday, January 10

The Meadowlands Race #5

#4 Marinade Hanover (4-1) debuted for trainer Linda Toscano last time out and romped to an easy victory when facing a class softer.  She has been closing in :27 last quarters and draws an inside post here.  Although, she is just 1 for 23 last year, she is 1 for 1 in this barn and deserves a long look here.

The Play: $10 to win and place #4  Cost:  $20

The Meadowlands Race #8

#9 Deadliest Catch (3-1) had breaking problems to end 2013, but did qualify big last time with trainer John Duer driving.  He has faced top stake action most of last year and banked over $112,000 with just 3 wins and 12 starts. This horse is loaded with talent and should be very tough if he behaves in here.

The Play:  $1 Trifecta Key 9/13567   Cost:  $20

The Meadowlands Race #9
#10 Bad Feeling (9-2) had one of those trips where nothing went right last time out.  She was shuffled inside and lacked racing room and was in tight quarters the entire length of the stretch.  She did get play last time out and deserves another shot here.  She will pick up Dave Miller and could be primed for a big effort despite this outside post.

The Play:  $4 Exacta 10/147   and  $8 to win #10   Cost:  $20

Saturday, January 11

The Meadowlands Race #7

#9 Colossal (3-1) is likely the one to beat in this race after having a string of seconds in each of his last four races.  Noting his 2013 record with 2 wins and 9 seconds for the year, we are going to take a shot in here and use this horse for second once again and take a small saver bet with him on top.  We will try both #4 Cole Heat (8-1) who was a beaten favorite at this level last time and #5 Bolder (9-2) who is dropping in class and showing very sharp last quarter speed.

The Play:  $1 Trifecta 45/9/all   and a $2 Exacta 9/45   Cost:  $20

The Meadowlands Race #8

Let’s try a longshot in here, #5 Spinarama (8-1).  He made his first start last time out since July 1st, and showed a :28 last quarter when racing from the difficult post 9.  He draws a much better spot here and will pick up Gingras.  He has shown racing against tougher company at Yonkers in his past performance lines and could be worth a shot at a square price here.  #8 Thunder Seelster (5-2) makes his first start for Tony Alagna’s barn and should be very tough after showing sharp miles at Balmoral Park.

The Play:  $6 to win and place #5   and a $4 Exacta Box 5-8  Cost:  $20
