Big Horse Handicapper's selections for Dec. 20 & 21
Friday, December 20, 2013 - by Tim Second

The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday. The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering.

This weekend we will focus our plays at Yonkers Raceway on Friday night and on Saturday night we will be wagering on Northfield Park.  We will focus our entire $100 mythical bankroll on price plays, horses that are 5-1 or greater on the morning line.  And, we will also be making safer win and place wagers on each of our selections this weekend.  One of the worse beats as a gambler is to have a double digit winner, only to fail and cash a ticket betting exotics plays.

Last weekend we cashed for $70 of our $100 mythical bankroll.  Heading into weekend #60 we have wagered $5,852 and have cashed for $4,536.

Hopefully this weekend we can add a little holiday cash to our stockings just in time for Christmas!

Good luck everyone and Happy Holidays to you and your families.

Big Horse Selections for Friday, December 20 and Saturday, December 21

Friday, December 20

Yonkers Raceway Race #4

#2 Aequitas (8-1) could be a price play here as he made his first start off of a two month layoff last time out and didn’t race bad.  He drew poorly in that start, he was raced from behind and closed home in a :28.2 last quarter.  That was a good tightener for this gelding that has proved that he likes the Yonkers oval and has competed with tougher in the past.  With his inside post draw here he will likely try a more aggressive approach and is worth a look in here.

The Play:  $10 to win and place #2   Cost:  $20

Yonkers Raceway Race #9

#7 Bazinga (6-1) is moving up in class to the $20,000 claiming level off of a big win last time out vs. $12,500 claimers.  Last time out was his first start for the Buter barn and it was also his first start in over a month.  He has early speed and has also proved he has had success closing from off the pace.  He draws outside here, but we should get more of a price with his poor post draw vs. him drawing inside.

The Play:  $10 to win and place #7  Cost:  $20

Yonkers Raceway Race #10

#1 Persistent (5-1) made her first start off of a near three month layoff last time out against similar competition when drawing poorly and was raced easily.  She did show good late speed in a :28.3 last quarter.  With her rail draw here she will likely be firing away for position and is certainly capable here.  She has a top trainer in Allard, and this mare has made around $100,000 each year in both her 3-year-old and 4-year-old campaign.

The Play:  $10 to win and place #1  Cost:  $20

Saturday, December 21

Northfield Park Race #5

#1 Twinky (6-1) draws inside after a poor post last time in which she closed more than nine lengths in her mile.  She is much better racing towards the top and will likely experience less trouble with her inside post draw.  This appears to be a very competitive race, so I don’t think she will end up an odds on favorite.  I think 7-2 to 4-1 would be the proper range to take a shot with her in here.

The Play:  $10 to win and place #1  Cost:  $20

Northfield Park Race #10

#4 Diva Du Jour (10-1) is making her first start for the Will Johnson stable after brushing to the lead last time out at Sports Creek raceway and finishing third in a similar class.  She was a winner three starts back in 1:58.4 at the 5/8 mile Sports Creek and even though Northfield Park is a smaller half-mile racetrack it is much faster with its banked sweeping turns so we should see speed improvement from this mare.  North America’s dash leading driver is at the controls.

The Play:  $10 to win and place #4  Cost:  $20
