The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday. The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering. This weekend we will focus our $100 mythical bankroll at Yonkers and The Meadows on Friday, and Hoosier Park on Saturday.
Last weekend, despite having four winners from our six plays, the exotic wagers got the best of us as we only managed to cash $20 from our $99 in mythical wagers. We will head into weekend #47 in our handicapping venture looking to have better luck and enjoy another weekend of great racing.
So far we have wagered $4,577 and have cashed $3,239.
Big Horse selections for Friday (Sept. 20) and Saturday (Sept. 21)
Friday, Sept. 20
Yonkers Raceway Race #5
#6 Mystical Starlight (4-1) is dropping down in class after facing much tougher in Preferred and Open competition. This mare has beaten better then these before and is worth a look in here.
The Play: $10 to win and place #6 Cost: $20
Yonkers Raceway Race #12
#8 Southwind Jazmin (5-1) is a $136,000 winner so far this year that has been very sharp at Pocono Downs, pacing in the sub-1:50 range. She will have to overcome this outside post position in here, but she certainly has plenty of talent and has had success both from on or off the pace. She should be a major player in here.
The Play: $10 to win and place #8 Cost $20
The Meadows Race #15
#5 Sarah's Creek (3-1) made a long first over bid last time out and kept on closing through the stretch to beat similar competition. She has improved in all three starts in this barn and again should be very tough with this group. #2 She's An American (5-2) loves to race on the front and will likely be firing out early with her inside post draw. She led most of the way last time out before surrendering the lead in the stretch to our top pick.
The Play: $2 trifecta 5/2/all; $1 trifecta 5/all/2; and $1 trifecta key 5/23 and 5/24 Cost: $25
Saturday, Sept. 21
Hoosier Park Race #3
#2 Marky Mike (6-1) was claimed last time out for $12,500 after showing very good late speed with outside post positions. With his inside draw he should be more in striking range and we will look for a big effort in his debut for new connections.
The Play: $8 to win and place #2 Cost: $16
Hoosier Park Race #10 $230,000 Centaur Trotting Classic
This field is loaded with talent so we will try a bit of a sleeper in #4 MVP (9-2) in this spot. This 4-year-old had a banner year last year, banking just under $725,000 in 21 starts. He has won three of the last four races while facing weaker and could pull the upset with his up front racing style. #2 Wishing Stone (3-1), #3 Market Share (5-2) and #8 Uncle Peter (7-2) will be the ones we will use to complete the exacta.
The Play: $3 exacta 4/238 and 238/4 Cost: $18
