The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday. The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering.
Welcome back racing fans! This week we will focus our plays at Northfield Park, Vernon Downs and Mohawk Raceway.
Vernon Downs on Friday night features two big trot races including the $202,000 Muscle Hill and the $214,000 Credit Winner Open.
Saturday’s features will be at Mohawk including eliminations for next week’s C$700,000 Canadian Trotting Classic and also several divisions of the Champlain and Simcoe Stakes.
Last weekend despite many of our selections making breaks and having troubled race lines we still managed to cash for $119 of our $100 bankroll. Heading into weekend #45 we have wagered $4,378 and have cashed for $3,135.
Good luck everyone!
Big Horse Selections for Friday, September 6 and Saturday, September 7
Friday, September 6
Northfield Park Race #5
#1 Lady Sand Terror (7-2) will finally draw inside after having post 8 and the second tier post 9 in each of the last two races. She has been closing from well back and will finally get to drop down in class and seems to have a speed edge over her eight other rivals in here.
The Play: $1 Trifecta 1/3489/234589 Cost: $20
Northfield Park Race #6
#4 Metrodisle (5-2) dropped in class last time out and closed for a third place finish when facing tougher competition. Her trainer has been red hot winning at a 30% clip as this mare makes her second start in this barn. #9 CG’s Lady (4-1) just missed against similar last time, and for the third consecutive time will start from the second tier position.
The Play: $1 Trifecta 4/9/all and 4/all/9 Cost: $14
Northfield Park Race #11
#2 Miss Moon Light (5-2) raced big last time out overcoming early interference and closed sharply in a :28.4 last quarter. She starts inside on the gate this week and is dropping in class. She is the one to beat. #1 Make A Call (7-2) was no match for a runaway winner last time out, but she did stay for second and will again be firing early with this inside post.
The Play: $1 Trifecta 2/1/all and 2/all/1 and $1 Trifecta Key 2/13 and 2/19 Cost: $18
Vernon Downs Race #10 **$202,000 Muscle Hill Mare Trot**
#9 Check Me Out (5-1) has yet to come back to her 3-year-old form, but did show promise three starts back at the Meadowlands in the Ima Lulu Final when she broke early and trotted a strong :27:3 last quarter to pick up third at the finish. We will take a shot with her to race big in here.
The Play: $10 to win #9 Cost: $10
Vernon Downs Race #11 **$214,000 Credit Winner Open Trot**
#3 Sevruga (6-1) hHas been outstanding all year long winning 9 of 18 and only missed the board in one of his 18 starts this year. He will be gunning early and has set a world record while cutting the fractions. Seldom will you see a more powerful entry then you will with #1 My MVP, #1A Market Share, and #1B Wishing Stone, these three combined have earned over $5 Million Lifetime and is certainly the ones to beat.
The Play: $4 Trifecta 3/1/all Cost: $16
Saturday, September 7th
Mohawk Raceway Race #1 **C121,791 Champlain Stakes**
#3 Shes Da Bomb (7-5) had a nightmarish trip last time out as she was caught inside and jammed up with a slowing pace early, locked in until mid-stretch, then hooking wheels with a rival eliminating her chances. Things could not have been worse for this 2-year-old filly last time out, but look for her to rebound and put in a huge effort in here.
The Play: $1 Trifecta 3/247/24678 Cost: $12
Mohawk Raceway Race #2 **C$40,000 Canadian Trotting Classic Elimination**
#5 Royalty For Life (6-5) with the exception of the tough trip at Pocono two starts back, this Hambletonian winner has been flawless in five of his last six races. He draws the perfect post here and will be very tough to beat. #6 Pine Credit (15-1) was parked the mile pressuring our choice last time at a 150-1 and managed a third place finish. If he is able to get a trip early he could again land on the Trifecta ticket.
The Play: $1 Trifecta 5/6/all and 5/all/6 Cost: $10
