The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday. The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering.
Stakes action continues this weekend at Mohawk Raceway, where the stars will come out and shine for over C$2 Million in purse money!
We will focus our entire $100 mythical bankroll on the big Saturday night Mohawk Program.
Last weekend we cashed for $28 of our $100 bankroll. Heading into weekend #44 we have wagered $4,278 and cashed for $3,016.
Good Luck everyone.
Big Horse Selections for Saturday, August 31
Mohawk Raceway Race #2 ** C$121,737 Simcoe Stakes**
#2 High Bridge (5-2) just missed in a Pennsylvania Sire Stakes race at the Meadows two starts back. He made a break in his most recent race in the $500,000 Colonial Stakes at Pocono, but is the speed and should be very tough if he behaves in here. #1 Lindys Tru Grit (4-1) was very game in victory at Vernon Downs last time out and posted a :27:1 last quarter. #8 E L Rocket (3-1) has been on the board in 10 of 12 this year and closed well to be second last time out at Batavia.
The Play: $2 Trifecta Key 2/18 and 2/48 Cost: $8
Mohawk Raceway Race #5 **C$451,000 Shes A Great Lady**
It will be hard to go against #2 Precocious Beauty (6-5) after her dominating performances over the last two races and her inside post draw here. She posted her lifetime mark in 1:50:2 two starts back and is very sharp coming into this race. #6 Sudoku(8-1) closed nicely to be second last time out at a 12-1 price and will retain Jim Morrill Jr again in here. She has shown good late speed in each of her Mohawk races.
The Play: $2 Trifecta 2/6/13579 and 2/13579/6 Cost: $20
Mohawk Raceway Race #7 **C$683,000 Metro Final**
#2 Let’s Drink On It (4-1) Has been very promising and improving in each start this year. He has gone faster in each of his last three races and posted a 1:51:1 lifetime mark last time out. Last week’s elimination winners got to choose post positions, ensuring an inside spot and should be ready to roll once again!
The Play: $15 to win and place #2 Cost: $30
Mohawk Raceway Race #8
#3 Frankies Dragon (4-1) wasn’t bad last time when making his first start off a six week layoff. He closed his final two quarters in :27 while facing tougher competition. He draws inside here and after that tightener, he could be tough in this spot.
The Play: $6 to win and place #3 Cost: $12
Mohawk Raceway Race #9 ** C$121,737 Simcoe Stakes**
#2 Deadliest Catch (8-1) will face his toughest completion to date, but was very impressive last time when Trainer John Duer used a catch driver in Ron Pierce. He went on to trot a lifetime best 1:53.2 drawing clear through the Pocono stretch. His last three races have been very sharp and he deserves a long look in here. #7 Your So Vain (2-1) is the logical selection after a :26.4 last quarter when making his first start for Trainer Brad Maxwell. He was a beaten favorite last time out, but was closing strong in the stretch.
The Play: $1 Trifecta 27/27/all Cost: $12
Mohawk Raceway Race #10 **C$651,000 Canadian Pacing Derby**
#1 Sweet Lou (6-1) is one of four Burke starters in this race and is one that we tried last time, but could only manage a second place finish behind Bolt The Duer (5-2). Both Sweet Lou and Bolt The Duer are obviously great racehorses and these two have been beating one another in great finishes all year long. I think the price will be longer on Sweet Lou and I believe that either of these two can beat one another on any given day. This shapes up to be a very fast and contentious race.
The Play: $1 Trifecta 1/2/3458 and 1/3458/2 Cost: $8
Mohawk Raceway Race #11
#1 Bestofbest Hanover (7-1) was outstanding last time out when facing weaker competition and making his first start for Trainer Richard Moreau. He went on to crush his competition and paced a 1:50 flat. This is his second start in the barn, so we will see what he can do with tougher competition.
The Play: $10 to win #1 Cost: $10
