The Big Horse Handicapper picks for Mar. 8 & Mar. 9
Thursday, March 7, 2013 - by Tim Second

The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday.  The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering.

The stars are beginning to shine!  Last weekend we saw the return of Warrawee Needy in the Opening leg of the Aquarius series at The Meadowlands, and he was outstanding stopping the clock in 1:50 flat!  The second leg of the Aquarius takes place this Saturday night, Escape the News and Warrawee Needy are back in for their showdown, and it should be a great race but with the short five horse field it will be a race we will stay away from this week in our handicapping.

We will be including the Horse & Groom 2nd leg as one of our handicapping selections this weekend.  Last week the heavy favorite Quick Deal broke stride early then closed a ton of ground to finish fourth. Modern Family was simply outstanding last Saturday, and flashed home a big 26:4 last quarter to secure his victory.

This weekend we will be making five different plays from three different racetracks to include Meadowlands, Freehold Raceway, and also a race from The Big Horse’s home track Northville Downs.

Last weekend we cashed two of our five plays for a total of $80.00.   We head into Week #19 wagered $1,784 so far and cashed for $1,519.  Let’s try to turn that around as we enjoy another action packed weekend.  Good Luck Everyone!

Friday, March 8th

Freehold Raceway Race #5
#2 Bluebird Kidsqueen (3-1) is dropping down in class after trotting 2:00 miles in each of her last two races facing tougher.  She draws inside and this is the perfect spot for her to pick up her first win as she makes her fourth start for her new trainer.

The Play:  $1.00 Trifecta Wheel  2/3,5,6/all    Cost:  $18.00

The Meadowlands Race #6
#2 Modern Family (5-2) definitely benefited when the heavy favorite Quick Deal broke at the gate, but Modern Family flashed home a :26:4 last quarter as he cruised to victory.  This horse now has strung together four wins in a row and is in very sharp form.  #7 Not Afraid (8-1) Has been on the board in each of his last three races and has gate speed to get position once again.

The Play:  $1.00 Trifecta 2/7/all  and  2/all/7   Cost:  $14.00

Northville Downs Race #1

#1 Atlantic Filly (5-2) returned to her former owner last week when she drew a very tough post. She draws inside, and will face much softer competition.  She is the one to beat.

The Play:  $0.50 Superfecta Wheel 1/ 2,5,7 / 2,3,5,7,9 / 2,3,5,7,9   Cost:  $18.00

Saturday, March 9th

The Meadowlands Race #4
#10 Olde Time Hockey (7-2) will have to be on his best to overcome this tough post position, but so far in his qualifiers he has done everything right!  He showed a big brush as he closed home in :27:1 in his latest qualifier with Andy Miller driving.  He improved four seconds over his previous qualifier, and I feel the best is yet to come for this young colt.

The Play:  $10.00 to win and place #10   Cost:  $20.00

Meadowlands Race #12
#9 Veal Marsala (3-1) dropped down to this level last time out going a mile and a sixteenth, and closed strong to get the victory.  This gelding has made nearly a half a million dollars in his career and holds a class edge against these $15,000 claimers.

The Play:  $15.00 to win and place #9    Cost:  $30.00
