The Big Horse Handicapper picks for Mar. 1 & Mar. 2
Friday, March 01, 2013 - by Tim Second

The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday.  The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering.

We have a great weekend filled with Stakes action at the Meadowlands!  Friday is the First Leg of the Horse & Groom, and Saturday marks the Final of the Junior Trendsetter and the First Leg of the Aquarius series.

Last weekend we had three winners and a second from our 7 selections but again didn’t have much luck with our exotic plays.  We ended up cashing for $71 of our $97 wagered.  This weekend we are going to focus all five of our plays at The Meadowlands.

We head into Week #18 wagering a total of $1,685 and cashing for $1,439 as we look to carve into our deficit with this weekend’s action.  Good Luck Everyone!

Friday, March 1st

Meadowlands Race #1   First Leg of The Horse & Groom

#7 Volare De Vie (9-2) is on top of his game right now as he has been on the board in each of his last five races.  He continues to show fast early speed and has been finishing well through the stretch.  Other horses to watch include #2 Dw’s NY Yank (2-1) fresh off a lifetime best effort for the Burke barn, and #3 Enrico As (5-1) debuting for the Paul Kelley barn after solid efforts at Yonkers.

The Play:  $3.00 Exacta Box  2-7,   3-7  and  4-7    Cost:  $18.00

Meadowlands Race #5

#2 Hoboken Sonny (9-2) was locked in most of the way last time out and had to angle 5-wide through the stretch to close nicely to finish second.  He draws inside again and could be very dangerous in here.

The Play:  $10.00 to win and place #2    Cost:  $20.00

Meadowlands Race #12  First Leg of the Horse & Groom

#3 Quick Deal (2-1) has been a trotting monster since the addition of trotting hopples and wired his field in a lifetime best 1:52:4 last time out.  If he repeats that effort, this field is in trouble!  #4 Modern Family (5-2) has won three straight races and is another who comes off a lifetime best effort.  The top two picks seem to be in a different league right now and are very sharp.

The Play:  $5.00 Trifecta  3/4/1,2,5   and  a $2.00 Trifecta  3/4/6,7,8,9   Cost:  $23.00

Saturday, March 2nd

Meadowlands Race #6   First Leg of The Aquarius

#3 Escape The News (7-2) Races very well at the Meadowlands and was first and second in early January in 1:50 miles.  #2 Warrawee Needy (5-2) is likely the one to beat, he is making his first start since November and comes off a huge qualifier with a 26:4 last quarter.  #4 Mr Dennis (4-1) was a winner in the Exit 16W Final and continues to be in great form and always close at the finish.

The Play:  $5.00 Exacta  3-2 and  3-4  and a $1.00 Trifecta 3/2,4/1,2,4,5,6,7  Cost:  $20.00

Meadowlands Race #11   The Junior Trendsetter – Final

#9 Resistance Futile (2-1) Looks for a series sweep of the Junior Trendsetter and has been very dominate since his arrival at the Meadowlands.  He draws a tough post, but has won easily in the opening two legs and has paced in the 1:51 range going away in the last two races.  #4 Terror High (6-1) continues to improve and was very game against #8 Wilcox (7-2) last time out.

The Play:  $1.00 Trifecta  9/4/all   and  9/all/4   and a $2.00 Trifecta Key  9/4,8   Cost:  $18.00
