The Big Horse Handicapper provides a weekly handicapping column to the USTA covering races on Friday and Saturday. The USTA has given the Big Horse Handicapper a $100 mythical bankroll each week for wagering.
Last week the Big Horse Handicapper would have been better off staying in the stable! It was a very tough week last week as we managed only to cash $10 in refund tickets when the Meadows had cancelled due to weather and also we were able to get a $4.00 refund on a scratch at the Meadowlands.
So now that we are done with the history lesson, let’s move on and try again. This week once again we have included selections at a variety of racetracks including the Meadowlands, Northfield, and a couple plays at our home track Northville Downs.
Be sure to register at horsetourneys.com for this weekend’s contest tracks. Friday night it will be The Meadows and Saturday night it’s off to Yonkers. Remember entries are limited to 1,000 so don’t be shut out on a great contest that could gain you a berth ($1,000 value) in the WHHC Final at the Meadowlands.
We head into week #14, we have wagered $1,296 and have cashed for $1,174. So, we have work to do, but we again will start swinging as we head into another action packed weekend of racing!
Friday, February 1st
The Meadowlands Race #6
We are going to try a longshot in this race. #4 Magnum Kosmos (10-1) is very fast when he stays trotting. He closed well to be third two starts back against similar at 28-1. He draws inside, and won 8 times last year with a mark of 1:52:4.
The Play: $4.00 to win and place #4 Cost: $8.00
The Meadowlands Race #9
#6 Real Babe (3-1) looked very strong last week as she went wire to wire with a fast 28:1 last quarter. She is making just her third start in this barn and seems to be improving each time she hits the track. #1 King’s Cavalier (12-1) is very sharp right now, he was parked every step of the way and still finished a closing third. He draws the rail.
The Play: $1.00 Trifecta 6/1/all and 6/all/1 Cost: $16.00
Northfield Park Race #3
#4 The Sweet Dion (7-2) was very strong off a pocket trip last time out as she cruised by #1 Skyworth in the stretch. The Sweet Dion races best in a pocket and may look for a similar trip.
The Play: $10.00 to win #4 Cost: $10.00
Northville Downs Race #3
#3 Songonbroadway (5-2) is making just his second start for her high percentage connections. In her first start she dominated similar and drew off through the stretch. #1 Rock N Roll Song (5-1) had no chance when she drew post 8 last time out, but with the inside she will be able to stay much closer to the front.
The Play: $1.00 Trifecta 3/1/all and 3/all/1 Cost: $14.00
Saturday, February 2nd
Northville Downs Race #1
#5 Kable Kar Hanover (5-2) was a victim of bad cover last time out and raced well despite having to go wide and that was coming off a 3 week layoff. He gets Marc St. Louis Jr. back in the sulky and was a winner twice in a row the last time this driver drove this gelding. #2 Anvil Raider (3-1) is the one to beat as he has strung together 3 wins in a row! This should be a great race to start the Northville program.
$3.00 Superfecta Part Wheel 2,5/2,5/3/1,4,6 and $1.00 Superfecta Part Wheel 2,5/2,5/1,4,6/3 Cost: $24.00
The Meadowlands Racetrack Race #4
#5 Morgan Shark (6-1) debuts for trainer Ron Burke and has been closing strong in Chicago. He has a mark 1:52:2 last year at Indiana Downs.
The Play: $10.00 to win #5 Cost: $10.00
The Meadowlands Racetrack Race #7
This race seems to be a wide open race with several possibilities, but I will focus on #2 No Bu (10-1). No Bu has been showing very fast last quarters and has been making up a lot of ground as of late. He just needs to stay close to be dangerous in here.
The Play: $1.00 Exacta 2/all and all/2 Cost: $18.00
