Headmaster at the top of the class at Colonial Downs

New Kent, VA --- Frank W. Deliberti’s Headmaster scored his second straight win in the Virginia is for Lovers Series at Colonial Downs on Friday night.

Headmaster was an easy winner of the first leg as the 3-5 favorite last Friday, and this week he was the 2-1 second choice in what was a stronger field.

Driver Jim Marohn, Jr. let the speedy Headmaster relax through the opening quarter-mile while the longshot Gentle On My Mind cut the opening quarter-mile fraction of :264. As they hit the end of the backstretch, Marohn sent Headmaster to the lead.

Headmaster paced the half-mile in :561 and took a clear lead as he entered the turn. Headmaster withstood a challenge from the favored Firm Decision on the turn and opened a one and one-half length lead at the top of the stretch.

Headmaster was much too strong in the lane and drew-off and won by three and one-quarter lengths in 1:521. Firm Decision held on and finished second and Jate’s Skyhawk got along in time to finish third.

The win was the sixth of the year for Headmaster. Roy Dinges conditions the 5-year-old Artsplace horse.

The Virginia is for Lovers Series will with its third leg next next Friday.

Colonial’s harness meet will continue on Saturday at 7 p.m. (EST) with a 12 race card.
