Catskill Steve offers his picks for the $10,000 Pick-4 at Balmoral Park on July 30, part of the U.S. Trotting Association Strategic Wagering Program.
Checking up on “Catskill” Steve: I started the week off on Wednesday with 2 winners and a disqualification of a third winner. A scratch cut my losses to $12. On Saturday, small investment became smaller with a scratch in final leg. I had 2 of the 4 winners once again with a loss of $4. On Sunday, my single was scratched in final leg so entire bet was cancelled. I had 1 of the legs that my picks raced in and that one paid $12.20. For the year I remain in the black for $310.20.
Balmoral Park Pick-4, Races 6-9, Wednesday, July 30, 2014
$1 play: 67/347/510/13 = $24
Race 6: (6) Meet Me Tonight filly is at the top of her game right now taking a lifetime mark two back then putting in a solid try from 8-hole last time. Looks tough to beat. (7) Ride Sally had an impossible fourth over trip from post 9 in Balmoral debut, finished willingly with :27.1 final quarter. Makes second start for new barn, showed nice brushes at Hoosier when she was able to stay flat and pilot won with her twice at Cal Expo in early spring. Could be the value play here.
Race 7: Second leg looks much tougher and I'll try for a price here with (7) Russell L who has made only three starts this year finishing strongly through fast miles in last two. (3) Look Ma No Hands and (4) Jo Jo Spur both appear sharper than the rest in here and either can take it even though the later has missed three weeks.
Race 8: (10) Babyshoebuyer had a tough spot last time after flashing sharp form at this level prior. Mare draws another outside slot but can surprise if “hot” pilot leaves or can get her into the race. (5) Sand Taryn exploded with :55.4 final half rallying for place last time. Finds a better spot for low percentage barn and pilot and looks to have a shot at rare win.
Race 9: (1) Galactic Star gets the rail and is hard to knock having paced in 1:53 or better in last seven starts winning on four occasions. (3) Ashes N Dust was beaten a neck by top one last time pacing a 1:22.2 final three quarters rallying wide to clear excess cover and just missing in five horse photo finishing just in front of pacer who came back to romp on Sunday card.
