Catskill Steve offers his picks for the $10,000 Pick-4 at Balmoral Park on July 2, part of the U.S. Trotting Association Strategic Wagering Program.

Checking up on “Catskill” Steve: Started the week with the usual 3 out of 4 in the Pick Four with a different twist, a third place finish with a 1-2 shot in losing leg rather than the usual second place finish. On Saturday the first three winners including a $14.80 number, only to lose the payoff leg by a neck with the 6-5 favorite. Finally, on Sunday, 2 out of 4 winners including a nice $13.00 winner. A scratch on Sunday as well cutting the loss from $36 to $24 and making the weekly loss $72. On to the new month.

Balmoral Park  Pick-4, Races 6-9, Wednesday, July 2, 2014

$1 play: 468/247/58/4 = $18

Race 6: (8) Shootinforthestars paced a :57.1 middle half on long uncovered grind last time and gamely held show. Pacer has almost as many career wins as the rest of the field combined and has speed to leave the gate. (6) Itsallabouttonight is 0 for 8 career wise but adds lasix, has some early speed and may make it interesting. (4) Dave's Art has yet to visit the winner's circle in 24 lifetime starts but has been finishing fast and wouldn't be surprised to see him break the slump.

Race 7: (7) Class Star didn't miss by much after being used twice from 8 hole in improved effort. (4) Mr Musclemania didn't leave at 2-5 last time slipped out to follow cover nearing three quarters, was blindswitched off final turn and cleared too late finishing with solid trot. Can make amends with more aggressive handling. (2) Swan Life To Live returns from Hoosier where she was overmatched against Indiana Sire Stakes fillies last time after appearing to be headed in the right direction prior. Should fit well at this level and finds a good spot.

Race 8: (5) Act Of Magic drops back in for a tag and has taken her last five at this level. (8) Liqueur was claimed in last off a tough :56.2 middle half uncovered. Mare has rounded into form and figures to be riding live cover.

Race 9: (4) Casino Comp came off a short rest and strong qualifier to pace :55.3 final half and get up on the wire to beat many of these. Gets the nod in a field of sharp gals but will need best effort and another good drive from provisional pilot.

Good Luck and Enjoy the Holiday Weekend!
