Catskill Steve offers his picks for the $10,000 Pick-4 at Balmoral Park on May 14, part of the U.S. Trotting Association Strategic Wagering Program.
Checking up on “Catskill” Steve: Last Wednesday I had 3 out of 4 in the Pick 4. On Saturday, 2 out of 4 and on Sunday, once again 3 out of 4. For the week 0 for 3 and with a scratch on Sunday, loss was cut down to $60. On to the new week.
Balmoral Park Pick-4, Races 6-9, Wednesday, May 14, 2014
$1 play: 17/68/49/378 = $24
Race 6: (7) Prairie Thunder wrapped up the 2013 season with a strong front end win from post 8 on nine-degree Chicago night. Wasn't seen until a qualifier at Springfield on May 2nd when he was parked to the top before yielding, chased a moderate pace before pulling the pocket and roaring home down the lane in :28.4 to nip none other than trotter and 2013 Chicago Horse Of The Year King Mufasa. Now four-year-old will likely be ready and doesn't face a tough field. (1) Incredibly Sporty doesn't win often but is as sharp as any in here, gets the rail and figures to be well placed.
Race 7: (6) Park Lane Crystal finished overloaded with pace when dropped to this level in last. Gets slightly better spot and can motor by in the late stages. (8) Anightwithwilma had post 10 and was parked past :28.2 quarter, secured the pocket and chased :56.4 middle half holding well for show through a :28.3 final quarter in solid effort.
Race 8: (9) Royal Tabs well bred filly returned to the races with a strong speed tightener in sophomore debut, holding well for show. Was up against tougher on The Pa. Sire Stakes trail last year and will likely go a big mile despite drawing post 9 tonight. (4) Bells Moped has been racing in sharp form in recent. Finds a good spot and should be a factor at or near the pace.
Race 9: (7) Bell Valley Art had no shot chasing tougher through wicked 1:53 mile in latest after pacing a 1:25.1 final three quarters to roll past similar off a flawless Heitman steer. (8) Nancys Skyscape cost me last Wednesday's Pick-4 when she left for the pocket, made second move to challenge new leader but was unable to clear and wound up parked the rest of the way at 4-5. Moves into new barn off claim and can make amends with kinder trip. (3) Ive Got The Key was parked through brutal pace before clearing past the half, faced immediate pressure from the former and held that one out before tiring in ultra-game mile in just second start of the year. Pacer went some big miles last year and should be a factor from better spot tonight.
