Catskill Steve offers his picks for the guaranteed $10,000 Pick-5 pool at Yonkers Raceway on December 16, part of the U.S. Trotting Association Strategic Wagering Program.

Yonkers Raceway Pick-5, Races 5-9, Monday, December 16, 2013.

$.50 play: 23/36/12/2/68= $8

Analysis:

Race 5: (3) Scotty Doesnt Know is just 1 for his last 52 but returns to Yonkers at greatly reduced level following an improved first over try at The Meadowlands over sloppy surface, doesn't face much and looks like a good chance at rare win. (2) Habanero hard to believe this game senior citizen is winless on the year but has been racing well over half-mile tracks in recent and you don't win 64 races in your career without a ton of ability.

Race 6: (3) Trip Hanover hard to go past this one who has taken three straight at this level with no end in sight but I will give (6) Fox Valley Action a shot at upsetting the 6-5 morning line favorite. This one has chased tougher through fast miles in recent following two strong wins at this level prior. Returns to that winning level tonight and is capable of pulling the surprise.

Race 7: Don't know how (2) Rocknroll Special will adapt to the eastern temperatures and the half-miler after chasing Open Company in Florida on 77-degree night. Ships up to join strong Buter barn and drop in for a tag after clocking some swift final quarters on the big track at Hoosier. Should fit with these and gets Brennan for local debut. (1) Abominable Snowman finished with strong pace to nail place in latest and won off perfect pocket trip three back from similar spot to tonight's.

Race 8: (2) Heavenly Way you won't see many horses shipping out of low claiming ranks at Pocono to take on N/W of 4 at Yonkers listed at 4-5 morning line with less than imposing past performance lines but, it's an indication of very weak the field is in this event and, although not thrilled at a likely $2.60 number, I can't find anything else.

Race 9: (6) Little Prince and (8) Delco Rocknroll continue to race in raging form with each seemingly taking turns beating the other. They draw tough spots tonight and, although either or both can show early speed, will likely be charging off an honest pace.

Good Luck.
