Catskill Steve offers his picks for the guaranteed $10,000 Pick-5 pool at Yonkers Raceway on October 7, part of the U.S. Trotting Association Strategic Wagering Program.

Yonkers Raceway Pick-5, Races 5-9, Monday, October 7, 2013.

$.50 play: 245/278/145/24/34= $54

Race 5:  I've always liked (5) Racsan Matt from his days at Monticello. Hard hitting 8-year-old returns to Yonkers off career best mile taking the uncovered route to get there at Saratoga. Should fit well at this level and rates the top spot. (2) Pembroke Dewey finished behind top one in their last Saratoga meeting but had 8-hole and never got involved. 4-year-old knows where the winner's circle is having won 23 of 65 career starts, returns to Yonkers at reduced level and gets first inside post in a long while. (4) Hare Craft was parked the mile in latest. Pacer has been in tough in all recent miles and figures to improve with the class relief.

Race 6: (2) Babe's I Scoot hasn't finished that far behind against tougher in recent; drops to winning level and finds good spot. (7) Hunchie strung three in a row at Scioto, two in sub 1:53 miles, then put in a solid two-move try past a 1:25.4 three quarters at The Delaware, Ohio fairgrounds in latest. Ships to Yonkers in top form for strong connections and has speed to be a major player. (8) Cee Pee Panic hasn't raced since early June and draws 8-hole, but had useful qualifier at Freehold and barn has been known to return them ready.

Race 7: (1) Art Of Illusion has been chasing better at Pocono following a decent try here at this level back in August. Gets the rail and can show speed. (5) Goban returns from Pocono off dull try following two good efforts here at this level in which he chased a torrid pace and held his ground late. (4) P L Fighter ships in for the always sharp Burke barn and should be able to go with these.

Race 8: (2) Dragon Laws has shown little against faster in recent, drops to winning level and can improve moving inside. (4) Lyons Josephjnr has been consistent at this level without winning; comes off a good uncovered try last time finishing ahead of many in here and looks like the main threat.

Race 9: (3) R Caan had steady rally from tough third over spot; drops and moves inside. (4) Royal Meeting is just 1 for 31 on the year but has earned better than $100Gs on the year. Comes off a series of first over trips and may be faster than form.
