Toronto, ON --- The Director of the Ontario Racing Commission has approved changes to the Woodbine Standardbred race date calendar through to March 31, 2014.
The result of these changes creates a consistent year round Standardbred Premier calendar (Woodbine and Mohawk), with a three day-a-week schedule from mid-October through March and a four day-a week schedule from April through mid-October.
In reaching his decision, the Director considered the input received from the industry and the letter of support from COSA. The Director also considered the recommendation from the Implementation and Monitoring Group to support the application, given that the proposed day-per-week schedule is consistent with the IM Group’s original modelling of the Premier schedule within a reduced race calendar, and given that the specific dates selected were based on projected wagering performance.
The IM Group also strongly recommended a consistent, year round Standardbred schedule, without any extended dark periods, which will help to ensure horse supply remains available for the Premier track.
The approval of the winter calendar from January to March 2014 is a conditional approval, subject to the normal consideration of racetrack operators’ licences that are released in early December for the next calendar year, and subject to the Director’s notice that the approved dates may be varied if circumstances vary.
Please be advised that any aggrieved party has the right to appeal the Director’s decision to the Commission.
