Catskill Steve offers his picks for the $20,000 Pick-4 at Balmoral Park on October 2, part of the U.S. Trotting Association Strategic Wagering Program.
Balmoral Park Pick-4, Races 7-10, Wednesday, October 2, 2013
$1 play: 7,9/6,7,8/1,4,5/8,9= $36
Race 7: (7) Kiss On The Lips sharp filly returns to best level and looks tough on or from off the pace. (9) Shelby Lu left and tucked from 7-hole stalked 3-10 favorite from the pocket, finished with :56.1 final half to hold place at 33-1 in improved mile. Draws tough spot but filly likes this track and could be a price factor with any kind of trip.
Race 8: (6) Mischievous Jesse had trot on both ends of quick mile. Has missed close to a month but gets slight position edge on main rival and hopefully retains sharpness. (7) Nonverbal Hanover had little against Invitational Company at Hoosier last time after mowing down top one two back. Finds a good spot to set up his late kick and will likely be charging late. (8) New Zion also returns from Hoosier and is dangerous on best.
Race 9: (4) Lovers Holiday strong finishing mare gets best spot in a while and should be sitting close enough to the leaders to blow by late. (1) Western Willow ships in from Hoosier and joins Delong barn; figures to get ground saving trip and is likely to improve. (5) Always A Cheater disappointed us last time but was likely unable to handle the sloppy going. Mare is capable of better, gets driver switch and should be a big price.
Race 10: (8) Metro Lad never got close against better field in last but did manage to pace a :54.4 middle half and come home in :28.1. Youngster is just 2 for 24 lifetime but anything close to those last fractions would crush this field. (9) The Gorgeous One was shuffled out last time following some solid tries with alert getaways prior. Draws tough spot but Dave will likely get aggressive with this one tonight.
