Catskill Steve offers his picks for the guaranteed $10,000 Pick-5 pool at Yonkers Raceway on Sept. 23, part of the U.S. Trotting Association Strategic Wagering Program.
Yonkers Raceway Pick-5, Races 5-9, Monday, Sept. 23, 2013
$.50 play: 136/567/257/24/1 = $27
Race 5: (3) Hardrockenjessica made two moves from seven hole and held well for place through :28.3 final quarter. (1) Get Packin has had tough posts/trips in all recent starts. Gets the rail and wired this level from similar spot back in July. (6) West River Victory took a lifetime mark at Pocono two back, then went first up at Tioga last time in solid placing. Sharp shipper should fit with these for under rated horsewoman and will likely offer some value.
Race 6: (7) Cloris Hanover has been chasing fast miles at Pocono. Filly lacks much small track experience and draws seven hole but has shown ability in just 11 career starts and can show speed. (6) Somekindamonster beat top one in last Pocono try and shows an easy wire-to-wire score against slightly lesser here on Aug. 19 when he toured the Empire City oval in a snappy 1:55.4. Looks like the main danger. (5) Thisthatntheother is a versatile sort that has shown the ability to race on the engine or from off the pace as she did here two back, finishing with a powerful rally from tough spot and falling a neck short at this level. Cannot be discounted.
Race 7: (7) Electrofire had a good tightener in first try in new barn, leaving and tucking in :27 quarter, making second brush to the top past the half and bottoming out chasing :27.4 third quarter. Drops for powerful barn that won last week's Little Brown Jug and may prove too much for good field. (5) Aled Hanover ships in from Philadelphia for Burke barn and has been racing gamely in fast miles. Drops in for a tag and should go well. (2) Mississippi Happy had a tough spot in first start for new barn. Moves inside and is capable of better.
Race 8: Another very tough event with numerous entrants capable of stepping up to win. To cut costs down a bit, I'll go with (2) Brussels Hanover and (4) Bettor Think Twice who have both been competitive on the NYSS trail most of the summer and who both should get good position.
Race 9: I'll wrap up tonight's Pick-5 with hopefully a bit of a price. (1) Fools Gold drops in for a tag and gets the rail after facing tougher most of the year. Can show speed from this spot and has paced some fast miles over the past two seasons.
