Columbus, OH --- Richard H. Rhoads, Sr., 88, of Wyomissing, Pa., died Sept. 13, 2013, in his residence.
Born in Pine Forge, Douglass Township, he was the son of the late Henry and Anne (Mauger) Rhoads. He was the husband of Gale (Huyett) Rhoads.
Mr. Rhoads was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He began his career as a home builder and developer of Linstead, Exeter Township.
Later he became well known for his accomplishments as a Standardbred owner, trainer and driver. He is most remembered for his trotter Sir Faffee, who raced on the east and west coast.
He was also the superintendent and president of the Laureldale Cemetery Association. In addition, he was co-founder and president of Fish Pond West and co-owner and developer of Fish Pond Macaroni and Cheese.
He served as chairman of the board of directors of Berks County Industrial Development Authority. He was a past president of the Home Builders Association of Berks County, was the co-chairman of the Berks County Democratic Party from 1962-1966 and was also a member of the Chandler Lodge #227 F&AM and a consistory, shrine, and past director of the Royal Order of Jester, Allentown Court #128.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Karen Frese; son, Richard H. Jr.; stepdaughters, Kelly Bowen and Shannon Wertz; grandchildren: Jennifer Frese MD, Shelby Brunner, Dustin, Cody Maurer and Taylor Bowen; and six great-grandchildren.
