Columbus, OH --- Horace Henry Barnard, 83, of Afton, N.Y., died March 8, 2013, at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.
Mr. Barnard was born Jan. 25, 1930, a son of the late Sanford and Iva Mae (Fredenburgh) Barnard in Coventry. He worked on the family farm in Afton for 30 years and retired from Borden's Chemical Co. in Bainbridge after 20 years of employment.
He had a love for horses and worked part-time caring for them until his health declined. He was a longtime caretaker in the Mark Ford Stable, rubbing such horses as 2000 Horse of the Year Gallo Blue Chip p,4,1:48.4 ($4,260,959), who for many years was the richest pacer in harness racing history. He also owned several racehorses in the 1990s.
Mr. Barnard is survived by his sisters, Alice (Herb) Sines, Ruth Gunther, Marian Gladysz and Mary (Richard) Poltz; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Mr. Barnard was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Sanford and William; and sisters, Etta Me Norman and Polly Fletcher.
In respect for Mr. Barnard’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Eastside Cemetery, Afton.
