Monticello, NY --- When Monticello Raceway presents its 13th annual St. Paddy Pace for drivers of Irish heritage, for the first time since the its inception, the race will have a sponsor.
Peter Grandich is a sportsman and horse owner whose Trinity Financial Sports and Entertainment Management Company (www.trinityfsem.com) provides insurance and estate planning services to professional athletes. He began his Grandich Letter in 1984 and now several million words later he has authored two books on topics related to finance, faith and the economy.
Grandich, a Wall Street veteran, is currently the owner of five harness horses and one of his trainers, “Irish” Joe Hanney, will be among the participants in the event. One of Grandich’s horses, trotter Orange Bigi, was a recent 1:57.3 winner at Yonkers Raceway.
Grandich has been called the Wall Street Whiz Kid by ABCs Good Morning America, has been a market strategist, managed four hedge funds and a mutual fund that bore his name. Peter, along with his wife Mary, will be in the winner’s circle on Wednesday afternoon (March 13) to congratulate and make the presentation to the winning driver of the race.
“It’s my pleasure to be involved in Monticello Raceway’s St. Paddy Pace,” Grandich said. “Even though I’m not of Irish decent my wife was born and raised in County Offaly Ireland. We were married there in 1981 and have visited dozens of times.
“And besides, one of my trainers is Joe Hanney from Dublin, Ireland. So with him in the race I also wanted to be a part of it. But I think Monticello’s races for different ethnicities is an interesting twist on racing.”
Although the drivers for the St. Paddy Pace are yet to be finalized, among those expected to join Hanney are former event winners Jimmy Marohn, Jr., Jimmy Taggart, Jr., John McDermott and Mike Doherty.
“We already have a good nucleus of talent for our St. Paddy Pace but we will still need eight drivers for a full field,” noted the track's director of racing, Eric Warner.
Any driver of Irish extraction who is interested in competing is urged to contact Warner in the race office at Monticello Raceway by calling 845.794.4100, ext. 557; or they can contact the track’s publicity office at ext. 455.
