Let’s concentrate on finding valuable wagers from a dozen great fields in the 2013 Breeders Crown on Oct. 19 at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. Luckily, we live in an age where you can find a large number of formats to wager without being there. But if you can, get there, because the on-site energy is exhilarating.
It’s more difficult than one would think to forecast which horses will go off at what odds but we attempt to find “outside contenders” with—in our opinions—should go off with odds higher than their chances. We watch replays and we read charts and we go for the price. Here are some of our suggestions on the program and how we may play them according to the post-time wagering opportunities.
2-Year-Old Colt Trot (Race 3)
Father Patrick (2) is one of the four horses that stand out. Last week we hooked him with Nuncio (8) cold to get a fabulous $26.80 exacta. Key Father Patrick, though he could be considered an overlay at 1-5. With him, use Don Dorado (6) and Nuncio in exotics.
2-Year-Old Filly Pace (Race 4)
We support Uffizi Hanover (3) at a price; the obvious contenders, Precocious Beauty (8), Allstar Rating (4) and She’s Da Bomb (6) may cancel one another out. There is room for Southwind Silence (5) to be in an exotic as well.
2-Year-Old Filly Trot (Race 5)
Lifetime Pursuit (5) may offer a decent price, overlooked in lieu of world-record-makers. But trip, not time, matters most when you look for prices.
Open Trot (Race 6)
We hope the crowd ignores Arch Madness (7) again, over betting Intimidate (5). As well, Uncle Peter (8) and Mister Herbie (6) could be a big triple.
3-Year-Old Filly Pace (Race 7)
Here is the next standout. I Luv The Nitelife (7) needs no more accolades. We’ll look for Parlee Beach (1) to be second and boost the exacta.
2-Year-Old Colt Pace (Race 8)
Beaten favorite So Surreal (4) overcame a slow start and should be much better and a good price over the elim winners. Three Of Clubs (8) will offer a strong exacta.
Older Mare Trot (Race 9)
Check Me Out (2) may be at her 4-year-old peak and pay big over Maven (1). In fact, try an exacta with Unefoisdansmavie (4) in the mix. Maven third? Why not?
Older Mare Pace (Race 10)
The crowd’s moves are obvious, but this is not a popularity contest, so we expect Monkey On My Wheel (5) to be third or fourth choice, which is a gift. Rocklamation (1) for exactas.
3-Year-Old Filly Trot (Race 11)
The next standout, Bee A Magician (4), offers little to win but maybe a worthy exacta with Coffeecake Hanover (1).
3-Year-Old Colt Pace (Race 12)
Our hero, Captaintreacherous (1), is the key of keys. His great performance cause such chaos in the fields he races (and wins) that sometimes the exotics offer giant rewards (remember Twilight Bonfire?), so we use Apprentice Hanover (4) and Beach Memories (2) behind him.
3-Year-Old Colt Trot (Race 13)
We are glad Royalty For Life (1) was not so dominant in his elim because we may get a bit more on the win side here. Plus, using Deadliest Catch (4, big move in his elim was a flare that he can produce better this time) and E L Rocket (3) for exotics makes exotics a boon.
Open Pace (Race 14)
Get on board for Modern Legend (4), who should be dismissed by bettors, and use Pet Rock (5) and Golden Receiver (3) for exotics. The crowd may want to hand Foiled Again (2) the title, but we need to bet against that.
If you are there, see you there; if you are not, we wish you all the luck you will need to profit on the evening’s betting affairs.
