Irving W. Mauran, 90, dies
Tuesday, December 29, 2009 - from the USTA Communications Department

Columbus, OH --- Irving W. Mauran, 90, of Westport, N.Y., died Dec. 24, 2009, at Community Hospital in Elizabethtown, N.Y.

Mr. Mauran was born Feb. 23, 1919, in Lewis, N.Y., the son of Beatrice (Kingman) Mauran and Benoit L. Mauran. He married Gladys T. DeGroff on June 27, 1940, at the Westport Baptist Church.

He attended schools in Lewis and Elizabethtown. He worked for Republic Steel Corp. in the mines at Mineville, N.Y., for 38 years. After his retirement, he was employed by the NYS Dept. of Conservation and the NYS Dept. of Forestry.

Mr. Mauran was a member of the USTA, an owner of Standardbreds, and an associate judge at the Essex County Fair for many years.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Germany at the Battle of the Bulge. After World War II, he attended U.S. Army War College where he was trained in advanced fingerprinting and interrogation. He was selected as a personal body guard to the British prosecutor at the Military Tribunal of War Crimes at Nuremberg, Germany.

He was a life member of the Mineville Veteran of Foreign Wars and a member for 50 years of the Lasher Still Post 324 American Legion, where he served as commander.

While in Mineville, he and his wife started the Boy Scouts. When he moved to Westport, he once again took the reins of starting scouting there.

He was a member of the Westport Federated Church since 1944, serving as head deacon for many years. He was also a member of the Masons Sisco Lodge and the Order of Eastern Stars Bessboro Chapter 651. In 1989, he became District Deputy Grand Lecturer of Clinton Essex District. He was a member of Wadhams Grange 1051, where he served as lecturer and other offices for many years.

For 31 years, he stood side by side with his wife, laying wreaths on the village green for Memorial Day. He also served as the community Santa, was a member of the Town Council, and director of Soil and Water Conservation.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys; son, Irving H. (Cheryl), a New York/Maine-based driver/trainer; daughters, Sandra McQueen, Brenda (Bill) LaHendro and Derinda (Sam) Sherman; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; brother, Donald; and sisters, Freda Aldous, Elizabeth Decker, Martha Cross, Evelyn Waugh and Katherine O'Neil. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Howard and Alfred; sister, Dorothy Blanchard; and son-in-law, Donald McQueen Sr.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, at the Westport Federated Church, Westport, N.Y.
